He’s a fool in name only. The designer of Fortune’s Fool Apparel, Sydney-based Shay Carthew, is one smart cookie. With just three collections under his stylish belt he has already emerged as a designer to watch – and wear.

In his AW09 collection “Elegantly Wasted” there’s an impressive mix of tough, tight tailoring balanced with softness and a playful sense of scale.

“It’s a multifunctional collection that allows people to style the garments in their own unique way,” Carthew tells me. “I wanted to create a strong, tailored elegance and inject it with free-flowing, oversized comfort – at a recession-friendly price.”

A militaristic carcoat-length trench, boxy, buttoned and belted in thin, crunchy leather or wool is a key piece, to be kept severe with a fitted skinny shirt or loosened up with a lazy tee and 10 metres of thin, black jersey scarf casually wound around the neck.

Knits make their first appearance in the label’s range this year, taking cable knit to the extreme, massively overscaled in a cardigan jacket, and as knitted woollen leggings instead of pants. Another is a ribbed take on the duffel coat (with a hood!), with square patch pockets and leather-embellished toggle buttons.

Coming in August: a collection of men’s shoes under the label Shay Alexander Footwear.
